100% of your donations are used to benefit the communities of Lake Atitlan. Everyone who works at Volunteers Around the World is a volunteer so we don't use donations to pay salaries, and we have very little overhead which is covered by the individuals on our board of trustees.
Therefore, literally 100% of the money donated to Volunteers Around the World is used in one of three way:
- To improve education for the people of Lake Atitlan by; providing scholarships to children who's parents can't afford tuition (it costs about $50 a year to send a child to school), by paying the salaries of teachers who teach subjects that the Guatemalan government won't pay for like Music, English, and Physical Education, by improving the town library (where we are currently working to put in a computer lab), and by paying for college professors from near by Universities to come to Lake Atitlan to teach adults.
- To improve health, by teaching parents the importance of hygiene, nutrition, and clean food preparation, by enhancing sanitation systems, by vaccinating individuals, and by improving the equipment and access to medicine for local clinics and hospitals.
- To improve social conditions, by rebuilding the homes of the mudslide victims, by teaching better business management, and by offering business loan opportunities.
If you would like to help, come volunteer with us. There is lots of work to be done, but if you can't come volunteer with us, then any donations you can make will be a great help. Even one Dollar or Euro goes a long ways to helping improve the conditions here in Guatemala.
