There are two hospitals and several clinics around Lake Atitlan where you can volunteer. (El Hospitalito in Santiago is currently under reconstruction due to the October 2005 Mudslide.) All levels of training from nursing students to specialized physicians are needed. Work with an organization called Ami San Lucas that focuses on teaching mothers the importance of nutrition and personal hygiene. Train nurses so that they can run clinics and provide care for patients. Treat patients in a clinic or at the San Pedro hospital.

Physicians with specialized training are needed as well. Most of the doctors at Lake Atitlan are general physicians. Often there are surgeries, skin disorders, eye diseases and other problems for which your expertise is greatly needed.
