The municipal library of San Pedro Atitlan serves a town of about 8,000 children. The library is essentially the only source from which the children can obtain information to do their schoolwork. They have about 400 books and one computer with no internet access. The library is housed in a huge building, but since there are so few books and other resources it occupies only one floor. The other floors sit empty, waiting to be used. However, despite it’s limited resources the library is always filled with children doing schoolwork.
Volunteers are able to help children locate the information they need for their schoolwork, and they can tutor the children who need it. Volunteers Around the World is also working to expand the library’s collection of books as well as install a computer lab with internet access.
